WHY HAVE SCHEDULES & ROUTINES?
Schedules and routines allow children to feel a sense of stability. There is comfort in knowing what to expect. Students are more likely to be engaged in learning if they are not worried about what is coming. Therefore, having schedules posted and getting students into a routine will allow for maximal use of class time. The daily schedule for my classroom will be posted on the board for my students to see. Schedules and routines help children feel secure and comfortable, it is important for them to know what to expect. The posted schedule will allow students to keep track of where we are in the school day and it will hold us to our routine. If there is a change in the schedule, I will be sure to make the students aware of the change and post it on the board so that they do not forget. |

Lining Up: Students will alphabetically be assigned a number. The student whose last name comes first alphabetically will be number one, and so on. When it is time to line up to walk down the hall to music class, recess, an assembly, etc., I will say, “Line time!” and the students will proceed to quickly and quietly line up based on their number. The students will become fast at lining up as they get accustomed to who is in front of and behind them.

Sharpening a Pencil: As pencil sharpening can be noisy and distracting, I will have two cups on my desk. One will be for students to put a dull pencil, and the other will be full of sharpened pencils. This way a student can quickly and quietly get a sharpened pencil when they need one.
