Summative Assessment Directions: The directions for this assessment are written on the test. However, these directions are brief and vague as the teacher will verbally give directions to the kindergarteners that are to take this assessment. An example of verbal directions for this test is given below.
"Boys and girls, thank you for quietly getting out your pencils and your privacy folder. In just a minute I will begin passing out this test. This will show me how much you've learned in our unit on the needs of animals and humans. Since I am looking to learn about what you know, it is important that you only write down your thoughts and ideas on your paper and not the thoughts and ideas of the people sitting near you. For the first three questions on the test, you need to decide which group of objects is greater than or less than the other, or if they are equal. You will have to write the greater than, less than, or equal sign between the sets of objects. You must show your work, you can do so by counting the objects in the boxes and writing down the numbers as you count. The final three questions on the test will be about addition. You will have to read the addition word problem, and then draw a picture to show your work. In addition to drawing a picture, you will have to write down the answer to the addition problem. Does anyone have any questions about the test?"
